Volunteer with us!

Volunteers are extremely important to what we do. The more volunteers reading to children, the more students can participate with Read On Young Readers.

Volunteers read virtually or in person to children in elementary grades once a week in 1-on-1 settings to support language and literacy growth. Some volunteers read to entire pre-K classes. In some cases, children may read book with or to the volunteers in addition to the typical read-aloud.

Each volunteer will be screened and provided training before engaging with a child. The training will include guidelines and routines for reading books aloud and engaging a child in discussion.

All volunteers must be fingerprinted at the FCPS Gatehouse in Fairfax, VA, and pass a Fairfax County Public School background check. Volunteers will complete a 1-hr virtual mentorship training session with the FCPS Office of Mentoring and a 1-hr virtual training session with Read-On Young Readers.
